Ottawa, October 3rd, 2011: Last Thursday, some 200 people gathered in the Jean Pigott Hall, Ottawa City Hall to participate in Action-Logement / Action Housing’s 7th Annual Benefit Cocktail. Several politicians, business people in the region and community members were part of the event. Mayor Jim Watson began the evening with heartfelt words regarding the work of the organization, which dedicates itself to ensuring a better home for the less fortunate people of Ottawa.
The president of Action Housing, Denis Losier, thanked the sponsors and participants of the Cocktail and reiterated the importance of an organization such as Action Housing in helping families living in precarious housing situations. According to Mr. Losier, the commitment of the business community is essential to the success of Action Housing and its interventions in allowing all citizens of Ottawa to access safe and affordable housing.
Honorary President, Ronald Tourigny, said he was quite surprised to see the large number of people waiting in the corridors of Action Housing during his recent visit of the organization. "It struck me to see how so many families need help to access affordable housing." The keynote speaker, Michel Bilodeau, President and CEO of Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), said that in 2005, a study by his institution showed that more than 50% of young people who use the services of the Department of Emergency are living in precarious housing situations. He added that affordable housing is an essential element in developing and maintaining the health of children, adolescents and their families.
During the event, Action Housing presented its 2011 Award of Recognition in Housing – Category Organization to Cornerstone for its initiative of 314 Booth Street, a four-storey building with 42 apartments, rooms and offices, which will house women permanently. The 2011 Award of Recognition in Housing – Category Individual (a new initiative for Action Housing this year) was awarded to Linda Lalonde, an extraordinary activist and source of inspiration for community workers dealing with special needs clients.
