Over one hundred leaders, including area politicians and key members of the business community gathered on the evening of December 5th at the École secondaire publique De La Salle for the 9th Annual Benefit Event, an event organized by Action Housing. The primary objective of this major event, followed by a benefit concert, was to raise funds for programs aimed at assisting the less fortunate.
“More than $20,000 was raised last night thanks to the generosity of a number of sponsors and the community at large,” said Suzanne Gervais, President of Action Housing. She added, “An organization like ours wouldn’t be able to reach its goals if it wasn’t for the support of the community. The annual cocktail benefit is an excellent opportunity to increase the awareness of the community, government and the media about the need to assist lower-income individuals and families to find adequate and safe housing.”
The evening’s Honorary President, Mr. Denis Chartrand, president of the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario and member of the board of the Ottawa Community Housing Ottawa, stated that he was delighted by the evening, which helped, once again, to mobilize the community’s support and energies for a common good.
In the course of a powerful speech about success at school and housing, he cited the shocking statistic that “students living in safe, stable, sanitary and affordable housing have better results at school.” He added that it is imperative that “we must do all we can to assist children in our community to have what they need to learn and grow… I am convinced that such initiatives would directly reduce the number of families and children who find themselves on the street or in emergency shelters”.
At the event, Action Housing also took the opportunity to present the Award of Recognition in Housing to a person who demonstrated a long-time commitment to assist the less fortunate to access affordable housing. This year, the Award of Recognition in Housing was presented to Marie-Lourdes Étienne.
For almost 25 years, Action Housing, a non-profit organization, has come to the assistance of lower-income individuals and families in search of safe and adequate housing.
