2011 Award of Recognition in Housing - Finalists

For immediate release
Ottawa, September 16, 2011: This year, Action Housing will grant two awards of recognition instead of one as in previous years. One award will recognize excellence in the services offered by a person in the field of homelessness and housing and the other that of an organization.
The finalists for the Individual Category are: Linda Lalonde and Eric Cabana. Ms. Lalonde is a dynamic activist with the poor. She is a source of information and inspiration for many stakeholders who work with needy clients. Mr. Cabana, laywer at the Clinique juridique francophone, has worked with tenants in the Vanier area and his work contributes to social justice and quality of life for these people.
Regarding the Organization Category, the finalists are: Cornerstone, Gignul Non-Profit Housing Corporation and Entraide budgétaire.
Cornerstone offers emergency housing to women in crisis. Its new initiative is 314 Booth Street, a four storey apartment building with 42 apartments, some common rooms and offices. All of the apartments in this building are permanent housing and not emergency shelter or transitional housing. 20 apartments will be for senior women and the other 22 units will be apartments for younger women needing affordable housing.
Gignul Non-Profit Housing Corporation works with First Nations to provide shelter for short and long term; the organization works to find lasting solutions to housing problems faced by people. Its new initiative is 1043 Cummings Avenue, a new development of 28 rental apartment units. This development will assist Aboriginal families and individuals of moderate income by providing housing at below market rental (BMR) rates.
Entraide budgétaire works with people with financial difficulties to help them to manage their personal and family budgets in an efficient and responsible manner. This organization has recently developed a micro-credit program that helps to meet the basic needs of individuals or families in Ottawa facing temporary financial difficulties or emergencies.
Action Housing will announce the winners of the two awards at its 7th Annual Benefit Cocktail. The event takes place at the Jean Pigott Hall, Ottawa City Hall September 29, 2011 at 17:00pm. For information, please communicate with Denise Lemire at 613-749-5975, ext. 202 or denise @ documentsetc.ca.
